During
the last decade of the 20th century the cinema
industry underwent a major transformation over the length
and breadth of Egypt. During the 1970s and 80s, the
introduction of video revolutionized the entertainment
business, but cinemas were sadly neglected. Like every
where else in the world, Egypt boasted a number of first
class theatres in the major cities with large seating
capacity. In their hay day they were ornate and sumptuous,
but the years took their toll and these monuments to the
past were in desperate need of refurbishment. |

 |
All this has changed. Cinema is back
in vogue in Egypt and scores of new cinemas have opened
recently, with further premises in the process of
construction. Theatres with a capacity of over one
thousand seats have been split into smaller units to form
cinema complexes, a concept fashionable around the world.
Decorated to give a fresh, modern look, the latest
equipment has been installed. State-of-the-art projection
equipment, and digital sound using Dolby DTS, and SDDS
processors in addition to screen and surround speakers of
excellent quality. Also, in Egypt, a new industry has
created,
the
manufacture of cinema furnishings. |
 |
|
Special
attention has been paid to sound isolation in order to
enhance quality, which is a major asset in the movie
industry today together with constant improvement in picture
quality.
In
addition to downtown theatres, new cinema complexes are
springing up in the suburbs much to the delight of film
fans, which is reflected in growing audiences.
New films, new cinemas and new technology has ensured that
the industry is booming in Egypt.
