The Cairo Opera
House was inaugurated on October 10th, 1988, following a void of
17 years after the fire in 1971 that destroyed Cairo's first and
world famous Royal Opera House.
The Cairo Opera House, a huge
ivory-coloured building surmounted by two domes that emerge from
an octagonal framework, stands majestically on the Gezira
Island. Surrounded by "El-Nil gallery", the Museum of Modern Art
and the Plastic Artists' Association and El Hanager Theatre.

The complex
houses the most comprehensive technical and stage facilities in
Africa and the Middle East.
In addition of presenting the various cultures of the world, it
also presents and promotes the performing companies affiliated
with the National Cultural Centre: Cairo Symphony Orchestra,
Cairo Ballet Company, Cairo Opera Company, Cairo Opera Choir,
Arabic Music Ensemble, National Arabic Music Ensemble and the
Cairo Opera Children's Choir.

Special
programmes and training classes exist for young talented
performers in all the artistic fields.
The splendid architecture of the Cairo Opera
House is typical of the Arab-style with Islamic filigree
covering the windows and balconies. It is enhanced by the lush
gardens dotted with mature trees and fountains, arches and
loop-hole walls.
The expansive entrance hall, beneath the
first dome, leads to the foyer flanked on both sides by passages
leading to the front rows of the great hall, or the "Opera".
On either side of the entrance hall, two staircases open
elegantly like a fan, leading to the upper floor and to the main
foyer. A restaurant leading to the interior garden, a and an
administrative office are situated to the right of the entrance
hall, while to the left an art gallery leads on to the open-air
theatre.
